Jennifer is the capricious daughter of hotel manager Dr. Karl Blankenburg. After all sorts of escapades by the prima donna in Berlin, her father gives his daughter one last chance: to discipline her, he orders her to work as a chambermaid under a false name in his hotel in the countryside. Of course, the spoiled "little one" is quickly overwhelmed by the unfamiliar work and is watched suspiciously at every turn by the housekeeper, Karin Kern.

Petty painter Sabrina Wirth is found, skull smashed, in her home workshop, by gallery-managing couple Marcel and Gabriele Ewert, who confirm she didn't sell nearly enough to afford her luxury life, including a new sports-car, which was vandalized on the driveway, and diamond-belly-piercing. Detective commissioners Sven Hansen and Korbinian Hofer find out she got the last from adulterer Marcel. Sabrina's sole heir, sister Anna, a stingy tax consultant, who supported their penniless late mother, was duly jealous that the stocks divided arbitrarily by their late father turned out tenfold as valuable for the squander-bug. Sabrina's other ex-lover, contractor Klaus Köhler, got Sabrina to invest solely to his advantage. In the precinct, controller Andi Lorenz's new surfboard, delivered there as he lacks a housemate to sign, causes turmoil, and again when he drives it home.

Experienced judge Lena Kalbach works at the district court in Frankfurt, the capital of Hesse. She is a woman with moral principles - and when she sees them violated, she doesn't take her legal duties too seriously. For example, when the shrewd lawyer Teddy Klein succeeds in getting a client acquitted using shady methods. Outraged, Lena refuses to accept the verdict. As punishment, the rebellious judge is transferred from the district court to a local court. She is immediately transferred to her old hometown of Fulda in eastern Hesse, of all places. For Lena, this is a professional and social relegation, as she left her hometown 30 years ago "because of the cramped conditions". Her grown-up daughter Nike, who works as a public prosecutor at the local court, lives here with her husband Johannes and their two children Clara and Emanuel.
